Macbeth and ââ¬Ëthrone of blood’
ââ¬ËThrone of Bloodââ¬â¢ is a close adaptation of William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Macbeth to the life style and culture of feudal Japan; a 1957 film in black-and-white contrast that has been acclaimed as one of the best plot transposition of the Macbeth. It depicts the deceit, and greed associated with ambitious fervency to acquire power and engage in tyrannical acts.  No doubt, there are similarities between the two plays; however, one of the original script was used in ââ¬ËThrone of Bloodââ¬â¢. Instead, Washizu Taketori replaced but not as violent and deadly as Macbeth; Lady Macbeth was replaced with Washizuââ¬â¢s wife, Asaji a master-schemer far less humane as Lady.  Macduff was not represented in the plot. But the threat for the throne was halted when General Miki was killed; but the latter returned as a ghost  Unlike the Macbeth where the king was killed in a fight as prophesied by the three witches, Washizu was shot by his own archers, a nemesis reward of betrayal for a greedy and treacherous leader. Washizuââ¬â¢s fate was prophesized by a malevolent ghost, and not witches.  Indeed, the film depicts clear eerie scenes of interactions marked by evil at high places, extensive use of symbols and mystic prowess to carry the viewers from ââ¬Ëthe Islandââ¬â¢ to the intricacies of Japanese culture and practice.  The theme of the story was not altered in any significant way; it clearly shows the fate of greed and craze for power. The characters employed used the uniqueness of the contemporary culture to relay the message of Macbeth: greed for power never pays; beware of friends, they can become traitors. The force of language lost in this translation was however replaced almost adequately with vivid imagery and sound. The film is great; and a must watch for lovers of Japanese culture, marshal arts especially Samurai styles.

Good morrow esteemed lords and ladies of the court, it is within my regrets to tell you that our ââ¬Å"nobleâ⬠ thane (of both Glamis and Cawdor) and King Macbeth has murdered our fair (late) King Duncan for his own traitorous and greedy purposes. Macbeth has betrayed his country and committed regicide, the highest form of sacrilege. The prosecution has found Macbeth guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, with several accounts of murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, one account of regicide and conspiring to murder. (accessory to murder) ðŸË⺠ Macbeth is a murderous heathen, whom sought to heighten himself to the rank of King by betraying the country (already stated this), his King and god. An earlier witness; one of Macbethââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Loyalâ⬠ servants, (the gentle woman) stated that he had heard Macbeth whispering ââ¬Å"I go, and it is done. The bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or to hell.â⬠ Obviously scared of Macbethââ¬â¢s murderous mind, the servant stayed quiet until now. There were more witnesses as of yesterday, as a cutthroat hired by Macbeth told the jury of the atrocities he had performed, before being dragged off to be executed. To quote; the murderer said ââ¬Å"Macbeth threatened me with a certain death if I were to betray him.  That was just a shimmer of the murderer within him.â⬠ The prosecution would also like to point out that straight after Duncanââ¬â¢s body was found, Macbeth killed the two intoxicated guards, blaming these poor innocent men for the murder, and also dispatching of two possible witnesses. Macbeth did also state ââ¬Å"O, yet I do repent me of my fury, that I did kill them.â⬠ In stating ââ¬Å"themâ⬠, Macbeth could have been referring to both the murdered slaves and our fair King Duncan. Macbeth also insinuated that the drunken guards murdered Duncan in his sleep, but if you look and think, and I am sure you are all intelligent Lords and Ladies, a drunken guard cannot harm more than a fly (people who are drunk are more likely to become very aggressive), as they would not be able to stand.  In an earlier testimony, we called upon Lady Macbeth, who, when confronted with the evidence and questioning, cracked under pressure and confessed her hand in murdering Duncan. Lady Macbeth acknowledged Macbeth and herself plotting to murder Duncan, Banquo, and MacDuffââ¬â¢s wife and children. Macbeth also attempted to murder Fleance and MacDuff. A servant came forth and stated that Lady Macbeth had whispered to Macbeth ââ¬Å"Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead, are but as pictures. ââ¬ËTis the eye of childhood, that fears a painted devil. If he do bleed, Iââ¬â¢ll gild the faces of the grooms withal, For it must seem their guilt.â⬠ Lady Macbeth obviously did not know she was whispering loud enough for the Servant to hear. Unfortunately, Lady Macbeth has passed away now, taking her life before more answers arose.  The defence earlier tried to state Macbeth was acting under the influence of three evil witches. They stated that the witches had told him ââ¬Å"All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!â⬠ According to the defence, this justifies treason, heresy, murder and plotting against the crown. The court was lucky (luck is not a part of their nature) enough to get one of the Witches (Weird Sisters and they donââ¬â¢t listen to petty human demands and/or requests) in the room, whom stated that ââ¬Å"Macbeth sought to murder King Duncan on his own accord; we witches merely stated he would be King.â⬠ The Witch denied fuelling Macbethââ¬â¢s murderous tendencies.  MacDuff, slayer of the late Macbeth, retold the account of his familyââ¬â¢s murder, which was issued by Macbeth. He stated to the court that his wife and son were in the midst of talking when a murderer ( he wasnââ¬â¢t there when they were murdered he had heard news of it but never witnessed it ), sent by Macbeth shook the residence by declaring that he was a traitor. He stated that his son, a brave young lad, meant to protect his fatherââ¬â¢s name. His honourable son screeched at the Murderer, ââ¬Å"Thou liest, thou shag-eared villain!â⬠ This was followed by a fatal stab to his son, in which Lady MacDuff ran, shouting murder. The villainous murderer sought after Lady MacDuff, who could not outrun the murderous lunatic. MacDuff was severely shaken during this testimony, for reasons obvious to the court.  He also recounted the end of Macbeth, in affirming ââ¬Å"I held his headâ⬠¦ I held the headà  of the treacherous king. I had to do it; he slaughtered my family, my life! I regret to say I enjoyed it, enjoyed taking back what he took from me.â⬠ If this does not prove the guilt of Macbeth, I do not know what does. As the court can see, the mind inside of Macbeth was a sickening one, as he ordered the slaughter of innocent people, to secure his position as King. In all these dishonourable acts, I believe it is in the interest of the court to say that Macbeth is guilty of multiple accounts of treason, murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, regicide and heresy. I thank you, esteemed lords and ladies, for your time in this period of turmoil. May King Duncan rest in peace, and the wicked Macbeth burn for his crimes.

Cultural Versus Opportunities: An Analysis of Frida Kahlo And Carmen Lomas Garza Words 1,715 Both of these paintings show the love and desire to hold on to ones heritage and family traditions which is extremely important in Hispanic families. Both with vivid colors and images. In Kahloââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Self Portrait on the Border Line Between Mexico and the United Statesâ⬠, even though she is a Mexican woman living in a non-Mexican country, she is able to accept both sides and hold on to her own Mexican heritage and culture which it seems she preferred.  In Garzaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Camas Para Suenosâ⬠(Beds for Dreams), Garza is showing the love and closeness she had with her sister and how her mother allowed them to dream and reach after those dreams as they kept in touch with their heritage and culture which is evident in her work. Holding on to ones own culture is important. It should not be forgotten. It should be embraced and tought to ones own children. As Kahloââ¬â¢s painting depicts, learning of others heritage and culture can be another way of embracing your own and learning to appreciate and discover it all over. The loss of culture can be devastating to the identity of nations and families.  Brief facts about artist Frida Kahloââ¬â¢s childhood and adult years introduce her complex life of the mind and spirit. Frida. ( Dec 4, 2002) The Christian Century from Fine Arts and Music Collection via Gale) The artwork evokes magical realism without attempting to imitate the gifted Mexican artist, who painted ââ¬Å"what she sees in her heart, on top of what she sees with her eyes. â⬠ Kahloââ¬â¢s Self Portrait on the Border Line Between Mexico and the United States, painted in 1932, is a very revealing work that gives a glimpse into the heart, mind, and soul of Kahlo herself.  The painting speaks of the connection, or the lack thereof, between Mexico and the United States. It is a very subtle, yet amazingly powerful painting. Kahlo did this painting while she waited for her husband, Diego Rivera, to finish painting his mural in Detroit. During this time she suffered a traumatic miscarriage and was admitted to the Henry Ford hospital. She felt very lonely and isolated from life and all that she knew. This painting is an expression of how Kahlo viewed herself stuck somewhere in limbo, in a place far away from her beloved Mexican homeland. P 34(1) In the front, at the bottom, of each side of the painting lies roots.  On the side that is connected with the United States the roots are actually cables or cords that come from some industrial object. The roots of these objects are black and take different shapes such as long and reaching or curled. They are clearly like industrial cords and are not necessarily reflective of anything that is natural. On the other side, the Mexican side, the roots are actual roots of plants that grow out like natural roots, reaching into the ground. What makes these roots significant, aside from their obvious differences, lies in the fact that one of the cords reaches down, and under Kahlo, touching the roots of another plant.  That plant appears to have brown pods which could well represent how the industrial unnatural reality of the United States is smothering and killing all that is natural, and in this case Mexico as well. It is pervasive and dark in nature. This is further emphasized by the fact that Mexicoââ¬â¢s roots are very natural and organic, whereas the United Statesââ¬â¢ roots are dark, and clearly manmade and unnatural. In this painting, show Kahlo wearing an dress that is very reminiscent of an American dress. It is a simple dress but it is pink and has many ruffles along the bottom of the skirt.  In some ways it seems reflective of the Civil War era, without the presence of a powerful hoop skirt underneath, or perhaps a dress of the old West days in the United States. Whatever the case it is not a dress that is reflective of Kahlo but of the United States . In addition, in the hand that is facing towards Mexico Kahlo holds a Mexican flag. In the hand that is facing towards the United States she holds a cigarette. Her hands are crossed. This all suggests influences she likes, dislikes, and is perhaps confused by.  She is, in this picture, part of both worlds and clearly the side that is relative to Mexico is patriotic and very Mexican in spirit. But the hand that holds a cigarette clearly speaks of the industrial and damaging nature of the United States, perhaps suggesting the negative influence the United States has on Mexico. As it pertains to religious icons or images there are no obvious religious images on the side with the United States. However, when one asks that question, regarding religious, one may well argue that industrialization, manufacturing, and smokestacks, is the religion of the United States.  On the Mexican side are many references to the history and the religion of Mexico. There is what appears to be a goddess statue with two infants, a statue from ancient Aztec religions perhaps, and the ancient architectural elements of Mexico. The entire natural presentation of Mexico is offered in a religious nature, even incorporating a skull which could well relate to the Day of the Dead, a religious holiday for Mexico. The religion of the United States, in this case, would be mass production, destruction of the earth, and money.  The fact that Kahlo is in the center of the painting does not suggest any common ground, but rather speaks, it would seem, of some internal struggle within Kahlo as she sees her nation influenced and perhaps destroyed by the United States. She is clearly a part of the United States and if one looks at her life one can see that her involvement with Diego clearly put her in close relationship with the dealings of the United States. But, she is clearly sending an image that indicates she is not happy with the United States and finds far more peace and beauty in Mexico, her home.  Schjeldahl, P. (Nov 5, 2007) Kahlo is authentically a national treasure of Mexico, a country that her work expresses not merely as a culture but as a complete civilization, with profound roots in several pasts and with proper styles of modernity. P (92) In Carmen Lomas Garzas painting ââ¬Å"Camas Para Suenosâ⬠ (Beds for Dreams), two children can be spotted, sitting on the roof of their home, gazing up at the full moon. Beneath them in the bedroom, their mother is making the bed ready for the children to sleep in, and a crucifix can be seen hanging on the wall behind her.  This image recalls a time of simplicity, where children can peacefully sit and star gaze, while their apron-wearing mothers make the beds in which they will sleep in. The image is portrayed through the scope of a child, and its message calls for Mexicans to remember their culture. Roback, D. (July 13, 1990). In the midst of racism and discrimination, Garza tries not to draw upon any of that; instead, she looks to the family for resolution Mexican-American Garza has generously afforded readers a glimpse of her cherished childhood in a poor rural Hispanic community.  Her daily activities and fond memories are related in paintings . Of the painting Garza stated ââ¬Å"My sister and I used to go up on the roof on summer nights and just stay there and talk about the stars and the constellations. We also talked about the future. I knew since I was 13 years old that I wanted to be an artist. And all those things that I dreamed of doing as an artist, Iââ¬â¢m finally doing now. My mother was the one who inspired me to be an artist. She made up our beds to sleep in and have regular dreams, but she also laid out the bed for our dreams of the future. P 54(2) This painting was inspired by youthful conversations with her sister and their desire to become artists and focuses on the joyful memories of everyday life with her family. The two sisters, Garza being one, are sitting on the roof close to the moon and stars, sharing their dreams with on another. The fact that they were Mexicans, in the United States did not change the fact that they had dreams they    wished to accomplish.

Almost one third of the young adults have been found to be insomniac (Bonnet & Arand, 1995) and almost 58million Americans have been shown to suffer from symptoms of excessive sleepiness throughout the day which impairs their social and functional capacities (Virginia Mason Medical Center, 2009). These figures reflect the gravity of the situation from a public health perspective. The magnitude of the burden of this disorder can also be judged from the exorbitant medical costs, both direct and indirect, which can be attributed to this disorder. Some studies report the costs associated with sleep deprivation and its hazardous consequences to be as high as 56 billion dollars per year (Bonnet & Arand, 1995).  The duration of sleep varies within and amongst populations and hence it is difficult to determine the level of sleep which can be defined as adequate.  Conflict in Short Story Essay  Essay on the Conflict Presented in William Faulknerââ¬â¢s Short Story, ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠ Conflict in literary works can be presented in a multitude of ways and it can be about almost everything that presents opposing forces. In William Faulknerââ¬â¢s short story, Barn Burning, the conflict is indeed about two opposing forcesââ¬âthat of the father and the son who values different things and who sees things differently. However, this is not the only conflict that the story illustrates. More than the physical conflict which the father and the son so obviously have, there is a hidden conflict present which is within the son.          This conflict is the battle between what is right as defined by the law which the son upholds versus what is correct as defined by familial loyalty. The story revolves around the case of the father, Mr. Snopes who is accused of burning the barn of Mr. Harris. Though the case is dismissed, the Snopes name is forever tainted and the family decides to leave town and relocate. In the beginning of the story itself, Colonel Sartoris Snopes, the little boy protagonist and youngest son of Mr. Snopes is in turmoil since he knows that his father did indeed order that the barn of Mr. Harris be burned.  Readers are able to see the conflict within the character of Sartoris who wants to say the truth but who wants to be loyal to his father, a father who nurtured, sheltered, fed and protected him. Sartoris decides that he will be loyal to his father even to the point of regarding Mr. Harris as their common enemy: ââ¬Å"our enemy he thought in that despair; ourn! Mine and hisn both! Heââ¬â¢s my father! â⬠ (Faulkner, 1939, p. 1137). This parade of thoughts that Sartoris conjures up in his mind is the beginning of the battle of his conscience of whether he wants to abide by the loyalty that he owes his father and family or abide by societal laws.  These thoughts are actually also a reflection of Sartoris convincing himself that he must at all cost, abide by familial loyalty. The same strain of thought pops again when the judge in charge of the case calls on Sartoris to testify whether his father really had a hand in the burning of the barn: ââ¬Å"He aims for me to lie, he thought, again with that frantic grief and despair. And I will have to do it. â⬠ (Faulkner, 1939, 1138). Sartoris knows that his father is guilty and yet he also knows that he must lie to protect his father and the reputation of the rest of the family members, that he has no choice.  Later on when the family leaves town to relocate, the father calls the son to ask him whether he would tell the judge the truth. This moment is where the father explains to the son what to do and what the importance of familial piety and loyalty is: ââ¬Å"You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ainââ¬â¢t going to have any blood to stick to youâ⬠ (Faulkner, 1939, p. 1140). This explanation of the father sums up the conflict that they have with each other: the father thinks that even if a family member is wrong, the others have to stick to that wronged member while the son thinks that truth and justice are more important.  This difference in opinions, values and perspectives turn out to be crucial points in the end when the father runs into trouble again and decides to burn another barn. The son finally decides without hesitation that he will not stand up for his father and for the rest of the family who chose to stand with the father. The son decides to stop the father by calling the attention of the barn owner that there is something amiss. Thus, the son wins over the father twice in the sense that he chooses to abide by his own beliefs while at the same time upholding the laws of society and saving the property of the other.  However, there is also a sense of loss of the boy since he has lost his family and he causes the death of his own father by reporting him to De Spain, the barn owner. In a way, the fatherââ¬â¢s explanation with the son comes true: since the son did not stick to his blood, his blood will also not to stick to him meaning that his family (the rest of the Snopes) will also decide to leave him or be disloyal to him. In conclusion, the conflict in the story is between father and son; and between the sonââ¬â¢s loyalties to his family versus his moral obligations to the laws of society.  Both conflicts are also resolved by the end of Faulknerââ¬â¢s short story with the death of the father. However, there is a possibility that a new conflict arises in the loneliness that the son is now going to experience as he makes his own way in the world and whether he can survive that loneliness. To Sir With Love Book Review Education Essay    Edward Ricardo Braithwaite, one of the first black teachers in the British school system, recounts his first year as a teacher in the autobiographical novel, To Sir with Love. Unable to secure a job as a physicist in London, despite his many educational degrees, Braithwaite feels the sting of racial discrimination. He is persuaded to take a job as a schoolteacher at a unique school in Londons East End, a notoriously impoverished and tough part of 1940s Post War London. His students, mostly White European immigrants, are typically from unemployed families, have very little money, and are habitually filthy and malnourished. Students are sent to Greenslade Secondary School due to disciplinary problems. Despite their low socioeconomic status, and lack of basic academic skills, Braithwaite, a black man from British Guyana, sees his students as privileged simply because they are white. For their ââ¬Å"underservedâ⬠ privilege, and ignorance, Braithwaite resents and pities his students   . Through the often tempestuous relationship between Braithwaite and his students, issues of racism and class discrimination are exposed. The struggle between teacher and student is a tutorial in critical pedagogy, and take the reader on a journey of internal examination, and individual accountability. In many ways, Braithwaites novel is a positive example of educational methodology, and the human connection needed between teacher and student.    The overt message of To Sir with Love is the equal exchange between teacher and student. At Greenslade Secondary School, Braithwaite observes that students are encouraged to speak their minds, and are given regular opportunities to discuss what they are being taught. Teachers collaborate with fellow teachers, as well as with students, to decide the format in which lessons are delivered. Lessons are student-centered, and take into consideration the human-world relationship. Through his first person account, Braithwaite allows readers to follow his evolution from perceiving students as crude, belligerent, and unkempt, to viewing students as unique individuals deserving respect and compassion, resulting in a true paradigm shift. When given the opportunity to demonstrate their humanity, Braithwaite watches his students rise to the occasion in their own time, and in unexpected ways, a message all educators must recognize. From his experience working with students from disadvantaged and un   derprivileged backgrounds, Braithwaite learns that all students have the potential to be successful when provided a teacher who believes in their ability.    Throughout the novel, Braithwaite stresses the importance of teachers as team players. The commerce of ideas and advice from fellow teachers offers Braithwaite the support he needs to be successful in his classroom. Braithwaite focuses on the integral role faculty play, not only to Greenslades education program, but to student success as well. The enthusiasm for teaching and admiration for one another creates a supportive, successful, and positive school community. Alex Florian, head master of Greenslade Secondary School, seeks to create a school environment in which students feel safe and comfortable enough to learn and express themselves. Florian encourages teachers to discuss student progress with students in Weekly Reports, and encourages students to participate in school-wide Student Council reports, both of which are opportunities for students to have a voice. The educational methods implemented at Greenslade are valuable insights into alternatives to traditions modes of educat   ion.    To Sir with Love, proclaims to be a non-fictional account of Ricardo Braithwaites first year as a public schoolteacher during a notoriously racially divided period in British history. However, the miraculous and inspiring journey may leave some to consider the extent to which the author, Braithwaite himself, fictionalizes the novel version of himself. Braithwaite claims not to have been aware of racial prejudice until landing in London and searching for employment. The reader may find this notion hard to believe due to Braithwaites admitted service in the Royal Air Force. It is difficult for the reader to discern where autobiography ends, and fiction begins. Despite the apparent weakness in nonfiction voice, the strength of To Sir with Love lies in its message of forgiveness, understanding, and acceptance in the face of hate and prejudice. Braithwaite becomes a successful teacher only when he is able to see students as individuals. He is able to overcome his prejudice and ââ¬Å"hate   ful thoughtsâ⬠ ( p. 204) because he learns to love his students despite their shortcomings. Braithwaite learns the most important role he can play in the lives of his underprivileged students, is to provide them with ââ¬Å"affection, confidence, and guidance, more or less in that order, because experience has shown that those are their most immediate needsâ⬠ (p. 217). Braithwaites novel illustrates the importance of an equal partnership between teacher and student combined with the shared goal of learning.

Phonetics in learning English    Introduction  The core of phonetic is to identify the characteristics of the sounds which human begins can use in language. Sounds can basically be divided into two types: vowels and consonants. Vowels are produced by altering the shape of the vocal tract by positioning of the tongue and lips. Consonants are sounds which are produced by the partial or complete construction of the vocal tract.  The picture of how your mouth looks when you say sounds. (Sharon Widmayer and Holly Gray) image of articulators  Your lips, teeth, tongue, nose, and roof of your mouth are all important for pronunciation. The epiglottis is also important. That is the thing that you use to hold your breath and to swallow. It closes your windpipe so the air cannot come out.  The components of teaching the sound of English  1. Vowels  Vowels are usually described by reference to five criteria, and these are adequate as a basic point of reference, although some vowel sound require more specification:    the height reached by the highest point of the tongue (high, mid, low) ,  the part of the tongue which is raised (front, center, back),  the shape formed by the lips (unrounded or spread, rounded)  the position of the soft palate for oral vowels, lowered for nasal vowels,  the duration of the vowel (short, long)    Some Generalizations (Not Rules) about English vowels and spelling  English vowels have long and short forms.  The long form is the name of the letter: The short form is as follows:  Long vowels are usually (but not always) indicated by a second (silent) vowel in the same syllable:  Short vowels usually stand alone within a syllable and are often followed by double consonants:  2. Consonant sounds  Consonant sounds have three basic features in their articulation: place of articulation, manager of articulation, and voicing.  Consonants produce sounds that are more consistent and easier to identify than vowels. Therefore, they make a good starting point for learning to read.  Initially, work should be done on identifying beginning consonant sounds (ex: t-t-t tulip).  After that, activities can focus on identifying final consonant sounds (ex: cat ends with the t-t-t sound)  When children learn to recognize the sounds of consonants at the beginning and end positions of words, they gain the ability to look at a word and make a reasonable guess as to what it might be. Viewing the word in the context of a picture will help reinforce this skill.  (for example, a picture of a dog with the word DOG underneath. The ability to sound out the D and G letters will help the child identify that the word is DOG, not puppy or dalmation)  The ideas and activities presented in this section will help children develop the following skills:    identifying beginning consonant sounds  distinguishing between two or more beginning consonant sounds  identifying ending consonant sounds  distinguishing between two or more ending consonants  choosing words that have a particular beginning or ending consonant    The following diagram shows the names of the various parts of the mouth involved in the production of English consonants:  A = nasal cavityB = alveolar ridgeC = hard palateD = soft palate or velumE = lips and teethF = tongue 1  tip 2  blade 3  bodyG = uvulaH = larynx and vocal cordsv  For each consonant, two parts of the mouth are involved, and the name given to it reflects this. Starting from the front, some consonants are made using both lips  try saying /p/ /b/ /w/ and /m/  and these are called bilabial consonants (bilabial = two lips)  Now try /f/ and /v/. This time its the bottom lip and top teeth which are involved. These are labiodental consonants (labio = lip, dental = teeth).  For nearly all the other consonants, the tongue will interact with another part of the mouth. The name of the consonant doesnt include a reference to the tongue however, just the point of the mouth which it meets. So for instance, sounds made by an interaction between the tongue and the teeth are just called dental sounds. These are /t/, /d/ and the voiced and unvoiced th sounds: / à °/ as in this and /à ¸/ as in thick .  If you run your tongue back behind your teeth, you come to a bony ridge called the alveolar ridge. Several sounds are made on or just behind the ridge  /s/ /z/ /t/ /d/ /n/ /r/ and /l/  Moving back from the alveolar ridge you come to a similarly hard but smoother zone  the hard palate. /j/ as in yellow is a palatal sound, are as the highlighted consonants in the words sheep, measure, cheap and jeep. There is also a palatal version of the /r/ consonant. If you found it strange that it was classed before as alveolar, you may have been saying the palatal version.  Notice that there is now a difference in the way the tongue is used. For the dental and alveolar sounds, it was the tip of the tongue which was involved. For palatal sounds, however, its the blade of the tongue, and as we move further back to the velum (the soft part of the palate, closest to the throat) its the back, or body, of the tongue. The velar sounds are /g/ and /k/ and the final consonants in sing and in bottle  often called the dark l.  This leaves only the consonant /h/ which is produced by air passing from the windpipe through the vocal cords, or glottis. Its therefore a glottal sound.  Place of Articulation tells us where the consonants are produced, but we also need to consider Manner of Articulation  how they are produced. The most important categories are:  Plosives: Plosive sounds (also called stop sounds) are formed by the air being completely blocked in the mouth and then suddenly released. For example, /k/ and /g/ are formed when the back of the tongue rises to the velum and momentarily blocks the air. These are therefore velar plosives. The other plosive consonants of English are the bilabial plosives /p/ and /b/ and the alveolar plosives /t/ and /d/. Some varieties of English  London English for example  also include a glottal stop which substitutes for the /t/ consonant between vowels. Imagine a London pronunciation of butter, for example.  Fricatives: Fricatives are formed when the two parts of the mouth approach each other closely, not completely blocking the passage of the air, but forcing it through a confined space. The air molecules start to bump against each other causing audible friction. Try the palatal fricative  the sh sound. You can feel your tongue up close to the alveolar ridge and the air passing through the small space left. The full list of English fricatives is : labiodental fricatives  /f/ and /v/; dental fricatives  the two th sounds; alveolar fricatives  /s/ and /z/; palatal fricatives  /ÃÅ Ãâ/ as in in sheep and /Êââ¬â¢/ as in measure; and the glottal fricative /h/.  Affricates: Affricates are really a plosive and a fricative combined. The air is initially blocked, and then released through a narrow passageway like a fricative. English has two affricates, the initial sounds in cheap and jeep  / ÃÅ  / and /ÃÅ Ã ¤/. These are usually classed as palato-alveolar affricates, as theyre made in a position half way between the alveolar ridge and the hard palate.  Nasals: when a nasal sound is produced, the air is prevented from going out through the mouth and is instead released through the nose. There are three English nasals  the bilabial nasals /m/ and /n/ and the velar nasal /Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ ¹/  the final consonant in sing.  Approximant: Approximants are a bit of a hotch-potch category, and contain some of the most problematic sounds in English. Well look at them in detail another time, but for now will classify them together as sounds produced when the airstream moves around the tongue and out of the mouth with almost no obstruction. The English approximants are the alveolar approximants /l/ and /r/, the palatal approximant /j/, as in yes, and the dark l  the velar approximant  as in bottle. Keep in mind, however, that this is a simplification.  This leaves the third distinguishing category which we discussed in the last article  voicing. If the vocal cords are vibrated when the sound is made, the sound is voiced. If the are not, it is unvoiced. Several of the English consonants come in pairs. They have the same place and manner of articulation and are distinguished only by voicing (1). For example /t/ and /d/ are both alveolar plosives, but /t/ is unvoiced while /d/ is voiced. In the summarizing chart below, where pairs occur the unvoiced sound is always given first.  3. Sounds in connected speech  Sounds are seldom produced in isolation. In connected speech (that is, any sequence spoken at natural speed), many sounds tend to be altered of modified by the sound immediately before of after them, especially at the boundaries between words.  According to the Excerpt from Study Guide, Connected Speech is the key to gaining a natural, smooth-flowing style of speech. People do not speak in separate words; they speak in logical connected groups of words. Even native speakers sometimes stumble over their words because they are unaware of the little tricks for avoiding the pitfalls. Trained actors, of course, are able to deliver lengthy, complex, and even tongue-twisting passages flawlessly. This is not a gift. They have simply learned the rules for linking one word into another with intention. When youve finished this tape, youll know the rules, too; and with practice youll become a fluent, polished speaker.  These are the steps for speaking in connected speech:   Direct Linking: Linking final consonants directly into vowels   Play and Link: Linking final consonants fully played and linked to fully played non-related consonants.   Prepare and Link: Prepare for the final consonant, and execute related consonant that it is linking into.   Weak Forms: A lot of the very small connecting words in speech are so de-emphasized, or unstressed, that they often take on a Weak Form.   Contractions: We use these words so much that, we usually contract them together.   Word Endings and Contractions: Common Word Endings (Suffixes).These are mostly unstressed, and should be treated like weak forms.   Dialogues Practicing Word Endings and Contractions: These dialogues have a double emphasis. Practicing both Word Endings and Contractions within a context.  Conclusion  If other aspects of pronunciation are dealt with efficiently, sounds do not present such a problem. Again, much of the difficulty which students have when pronouncing English sounds comes, not from a physical inability to form them, but from language interference. This occurs when the student knows how an English word is spelt and pronounces it as if was written in his own language. Reality, Illusion, Appearance, and Deception in Shakespeare's Hamlet      Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã          As appearances play an important role in today's society, so they also play an important role in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. From the first scene to the last, Shakespeare elaborates on the theme of appearance versus reality through plot and character.      Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã  Ã   The play's plot is full of incidents and events that are not what they appear to be. One such incident is Ophelia's ambiguous death. When, from the Queen, the audience first learns of her passing, the girl's death seems very peaceful, poetic and accidental. But later, during the Graveyard Scene, when the clowns are discussing her death, they classify it as a suicide. Does Ophelia, as it appears, absent-mindedly set foot too far into the murky waters and, held down by her heavy garments, meets with her untimely death? Or, does she, mad with grief caused by Hamlet's "insanity" and her father's death, willingly march to her muddy grave? Another example occurs when Laertes, Ophelia's brother, and King Claudius devise the Triple-Pronged plan. They set up a duel between Hamlet and Laertes. Since both young men are presumably using bated swords, this confrontation appears to be a simple, ordinary fencing match, no one will get hurt. Despite its h   armless appearance, this duel proves deadly, for not only does Laertes plan to use an unbated and poisoned sword, but Claudius also prepares a poisoned drink for Hamlet. Best Man Speech Delivered by the Brother of the Groom      Firstly, on behalf of the bridesmaids, I'd like to thank the groom for his kind words, and I have to say they have done an excellent job today and look absolutely wonderful.    I am very proud that I was chosen to be the best man today. Itââ¬â¢s often said at weddings that being asked to be the best man is like being asked to kiss the Queen. Its a great honor but nobody wants to do it.    I have a large library of stories to tell you that will leave the groom embarrassed and humiliated, but out of respect for him on his big day I have decided not to tell them. So I'm not going to tell you about the time he vomited over a taxi driver's head or ended up in hospital on his stag do.    The groom was born on November 13, 1972. Coincidentally, this was also the year that the first Mr. Alen books were published, and if you know     him or know anyone that has lived with him, you'll easily be able to guess which Mr. Man he takes after. No, its not Mr. Topsy-Turvey or Mr. Bump, itââ¬â¢s Mr. Messy. Even though he stopped reading the Mr. Alen books last year, I doubt he will ever loose his natural ability to make a mess. (To the bride) If you need any tips on getting him to tidy up, don't ask my mom or dad as they were unsuccessful for twenty years.    After leaving school, the groom had a brief career as an accountant but soon saw the light and decided that cleaning a swimming pool would be more interesting. After a few other career moves he decided that he was missing something, so decided to go to university to study sport science.    Before he'd gone away to university, the groom was extremely fit, as skinny as a rake, and very serious about his cycling. It was on the following Christmas holiday when I saw he was starting to put on a bit of weight that I realized -  he'd fallen in love with beer. I hear he had an excellent time at uni, living in a house of like-minded people who also had this great love.    The stag do was a couple of weeks ago in Brighton and on the Saturday evening we went to a club called The Event.
